Kentucky Derby in NYC
by Sarah Mintz, Contributing Writer
While tomorrow may be filled with mariachis, margaritas, and maracas, don't forget about the annual greatest two minutes in sports, the 138th Kentucky Derby. Even though post time is at 6:24pm and the race will likely be over by 6:30, why not celebrate the occasion all day? Transport to Louisville for the day at these great spots…and while you’re at it, you might as well wear your floppy hat and seersucker suit.
Mad 46 45 East 46th Street nr. Madison Ave.
Head over to the Roosevelt hotel to celebrate both the recently re-opened rooftop and the annual Kentucky Derby Bash. Enjoy a Mint Julep (or two or three) and the view until the derby broadcasts live from one of the projection screen TV’s. Prizes for ‘most polished gentlemen’ and ‘most derby chic lady’ include tickets to the Belmont Stakes and complimentary bottle service. The best news of the day is that there is no cover charge for this event. Festivities begin at 4pm. Giddy up!

Eleven Madison Park 11 Madison Ave nr. 24th Street
Keep it classy with Daniel Humm at Eleven Madison Park and indulge in the finest of Mint Juleps, live bluegrass, and the Nat Sherman cigar lounge while watching race coverage live. Don't forget about the four-start cuisine that is sure to transcend most other parties in town. While $175 for a ticket might seem steep, it sure beats a flight to Louisville!
The Brickyard 785 9th Ave nr. 52nd Street
Not digging the Eleven Madison Park idea? No problem. The Brickyard in Hell’s Kitchen is perfect for $5 Mint Juleps and Kentucky Derby-themed food all day long. Make sure you try their traditional derby “Burgoo”, a dense stew with pork, beef, chicken, potato, corn, lima beans and tomato served with housemade southern style savory cornbread. In typical sweet-tooth fashion, I’m most looking forward to the “Derby Pie”, a pecan chocolate chip and Kentucky bourbon pie drizzled with butterscotch. Sounds like a well deserved food coma if you ask me. Among all this deliciousness, don’t forget to watch the race on one of nine huge flatscreens. There will also be a prize for best dressed, so be sure to wear your finest derby attire (with stretch)!
Tipsy Parson 156 9th Avenue nr. 19th Street
Head on over to Chelsea for the Tipsy Parson's 3rd annual Kentucky Derby Party. For $40, enjoy unlimited appetizers, live bluegrass, race broadcasted via movie screen, raffle ticket, and a drink ticket. Also, don't miss the debut of their custom blend 'Tipsy Parson Selection', the restaurants new collaboration with Woodford Reserve bourbon.
Gravy 32 East 21st Street nr. Park Ave.
If spending your precious $40 in Chelsea doesn't sound appealing, make your way to Gravy where $40 gets you a 4-hour open bar featuring Mint Juleps, complimentary appetizers, derby on the big screen, and of course, prize for best hat. Party is from 3-7pm so arrive on time to get your money's worth!
