Top 10: The Best Burgers in Manhattan

May is many things, but to the food-obsessed world that enjoys any munch-centered occasion, May is NATIONAL BURGER MONTH. Oh yes, an entire month to revel in the juiciest meal between two buns. Here are 10 to keep you noshing all month long. Sarah Mintz, Contributing Writer

1. JG Melon (no website) 1291 Third Avenue nr. 74th St.
The best burger in the Big Apple, period. Old school, classic and consistent. Everything from the homey pub atmosphere to the cheap prices to the literally mouthwatering (read:drool-inducing) burger is spot on at this Upper East Side spot. There is something about the simple griddle-cooked beef, American cheese, sliced red onions, dill pickles, and toasted white bun with cottage fries that is unrivaled by all the fancy burgers around town. I'm not the only one who knows what deliciousness JG is serving up - expect a wait.

Black Label Burger at Minetta Tavern
Photo: Yelp
2. Minetta Tavern  113 MacDougal Street nr. Bleecker St. I love sitting at the bar at Minetta Tavern chatting it up with tourists, regulars and Mark, the coolest bartender in town. More than anything, though I love sitting at the bar with Minetta's infamous Black Label burger placed right in front of me. The price is steep, given its $26 price tag, but the first bite alone will justify the cost. This burger is all about the quality - prime dry-aged beef patty drizzled in clarified butter and topped with caramelized onions. Combine these ingredients inside a sesame seed brioche bun and you've got yourself a burger that is otherworldly.

The Spotted Pig
Photo: Flickr
3. The Spotted Pig 314 W. 11th Street nr. Greenwich St.
The Spotted Pig started off as a neighborhood place but it's short-lived under-the-radar status has long diminished, and the burger is partially to blame.  For $20, sink your teeth into this super juicy burger topped with creamy Roquefort cheese. I hope you like French fries too because you'll have to search underneath all the shoestrings to find your burger. I promise it's worth the occasional 2+ hour wait.

4. The Toucan and the Lion 342 East 6th Street nr. 1st Ave. Go ahead and be skeptical at the list of ingredients in this burger- I admit I was too, but that's what got me to try the amazingness between two bao buns in the first place. Just think; a patty smothered in creamy cashew nut butter and topped with applewood smoked bacon with fried pickles to boot. Yes there's a lot going on there, but somehow the sweet and salty combo works. And it works in the most delicious way possible.

El Doble Burger at Txikito
Photo: Yelp
5. Txikito 240 9th Avenue nr. 25th St. Don't get fooled by the minimalistic and simple décor at Txikito because the "El Doble" burger is bursting with flavor. Come in hungry because this burger gives you not just one but two meaty patties, topped with a smokey Basque sheep's milk cheese and "salsa especial." For $11, you get the most untraditional yet successful burger in town. It's only available for brunch and lunch, so plan this into your afternoon schedule and plan for a siesta immediately after.

Shopsin's Sliders
Photo: Roboppy.net
6. Shopsins Stall 16, Essex Street Market, 120 Essex Stret nr. Delancey St.  Sure, you might get yelled at or even kicked out, but Shopsin's sliders are worth the risk. Order three incredible sliders oozing with cheese and caramelized onions for a measly $10. I recommend eating them as is, but if you wish to add toppings, you can chose from chipotle, jalapeno and bacon for $3 or pixie stix, fried onions, and mac & cheese for $4. Don't want the soft and sweet potato roll bun? You must be nuts. But don’t fret, you can get your sliders served on mini mac n' cheese pancakes or cinnamon donuts for an additional $5.

wEE Recommendations at Shopsins: Check out the menu before you go because you'll need to order fast, don't bring more than four people, and whatever you do, don't use your cell phone. You have been warned.

Lamb burger & fries at The Breslin
Photo: Eatery Expert
7. The Breslin 16 West 29th Street nr. Broadway
I'm a sucker for presentation, but this burger could be served on a paper napkin and I'd still crave it just as much. The $21 chargrilled lamb burger at the Breslin comes standing tall on a wood plank, with a round tin full of "thrice cooked" chips aka awesomely fried but not greasy French fries, and a housemade cumin mayo for dipping or spreading. The gamey burger is exceptionally juicy which is perfect given the thick bun ideal for soaking up the drippings. A slice of feta tops the lamb burger and is a surprisingly pleasant alternative to other cheese options, giving the burger the perfect amount of salty creaminess.

The Juicy Lucy at Whitmans
Photo: Yelp

8. Whitmans 406 East 9th Street nr. Ave. A
Have you met my best friend Lucy yet? If not, it's about time! I introduce you to the Juicy Lucy, hailing from Minneapolis. This burger concept is as delicious as it is fun - the pimento cheese is cooked inside rather than on top of the beef-short rib blended patty.  Expect oozing deliciousness with every single bite. Beyond oozing cheese, you also get carmalized onions, spicy pickles, lettuce, tomato and a special, signature sauce all inside a bun from Blue Ribbon (another EE favorite!) for $10. Think lava cake, but in burger form.

Bacon Cheeseburger at Little Owl
Photo: Yelp
9. The Little Owl 90 Bedford Street nr. Bedford St.
Available only at lunch, the maple-cured bacon cheeseburger at The Little Owl is a homerun. The succulent patty is a unique blend of short-rib and brisket spiced up with cayenne and curry powder. It pairs perfectly with the sweet bacon and cheddar cheese all served in a buttery housemade bun. Oh how I wish this burger was on the dinner menu!

10. Lyon 118 Greenwich Avenue nr. 13th St.
It's possible if you don't frequent the streets of the West Village you haven't seen or heard of this casual french bistro, but the succulent and salty burger at Lyon is a true gem and in time, will put it on many a burger lover's radar. The bouchon cheeseburger comes topped with caramelized onions, chipotle mayo and your choice of cheese (cheddar, fontina, gruyere). wEE recommend gruyere!

Featured Request of the Day!

Here's a request that'll make you hungry!! Beware.

Request:  Fried chicken and sumptuous Southern sides in the East Village.

EE's Recommendations:

1.  Bob White Lunch and Supper Counter - 94 Ave. C @ 7th Ave.  Salivating just thinking about their fried chicken and biscuits.  I don't know how they do it, but they've mastered the art of fried chicken.  What's so great about it here is depending on the day, their menu is ever-changing to 'show off their southern roots.'

Photo cred: Gastrochic.com
2.  The Cardinal - 234 E. 4th St. nr. Ave. B. The southern sides here take up most of the room on their menu - fried green tomatoes, fried okra, mac n' cheese,  and deviled eggs are just a few.  What really steals the show is their bbq plate and fried chicken so make sure to come with an appetite!

Photo cred:  Serious Eats
3.  The Redhead - 349 E. 13th St. nr. 1st Ave.  Their buttermilk fried chicken, gravy and potatoes are truly incredible.  To top it off, they begin the meal by serving you their homemade bacon peanut brittles which will make you feel like you're dining in the good ol' South.

Recommendations for: Graduation Dinner in NYC

Mid May is a time of celebration for the high school and college crowds. Finals are coming to an end and graduates are busting out their cap and gown. Oh yes - it's graduation time in the N-Y-C. Exciting, yet scary at the same time. The best way to celebrate and ease the post-grad anxiety is of course, over a scrumptious meal. Whether you're looking for something casual or fancy, below are some delicious options that are sure to be crowd pleasers for your friends and fam:

Yummy pizza for the table!
Rubirosa 235 Mulberry Street nr. Prince St.  NYU grads, we know you've already tried calling Otto with no luck. Probably because it's just so conveniently located. Yes, that's correct, but have you tried Rubirosa? It's probably one of my favorite spots for pizza, lasagna, antipasti, you name it. It's about a ten minute walk from campus, but trust me it's worth every step. They offer a family-style Italiano menu and for $30 per person (excluding tip, tax and booze), you'll get 5 different apps including meatballs that are better than my grandma can make, two different types of pasta, three different pizzas and I can't even get started on dessert - I'm getting too hungry!

wEE recommend asking for the large table in the back!

Atlantic Grill 1341 Third Avenue nr. 77th St.  Family dinners to me mean trying to accommodate my vegan cousin, my Grandma that only eats salmon, and my brother that eats sushi for breakfast, lunch and dinner. That's why Atlantic Grill is perfect for the occasion.  They serve every type of fish in the ocean, including a full-fledged raw bar, meaty options for the carnivores in the group and a wood-burning grill that just makes everything taste better.

wEE recommend starting with the Atlantic Grill crunchy spicy tuna roll.

Community Food & Juice 2893 Broadway nr. 113th St.  Farm to table has become the new trend, and this place started it!  It sounds super healthy, and it is, but only because they only use the freshest ingredients sourced from local farms.  The menu is seasonally driven down to their cocktails - a crowd pleaser for one and all.

wEE recommend starting with the Community Food & Juice grilled heritage lamb chops: with fresh shelled peas, parsnip puree, rosemary baby carrots, and fresh mint sauce.

Imperial No. Nine 9 Crosby Street nr. Grand St.  This restaurant fits the bill if you're looking for great food in a very fun, trendy atmosphere.  Located in the Mondrian hotel, it'll feel like a special night.  Before dinner, enjoy drinks at their bar and continue the party in the main dining room that looks like a beautifully decorated greenhouse!

wEE recommend sitting in the garden room.

Telepan 72 W. 69th Street nr. Columbus Ave.  If your family is as picky as mine, this restaurant will please everyone. It's located in a charming, understated yet very elegant townhouse on the Upper West Side.  Bill Telepan is a legend among NYC chefs for many reasons, but his local, farm-to-table dishes are really something to talk about.

wEE recommend the four course tasting menu for $69 (dependent on entire table participation).

DBGB Kitchen & Bar 299 Bowery nr. Houston St. I could honestly recommend all of Daniel Boulud's restaurants as being fit for a graduation dinner, but DBGB stands out as the perfect place for such an occasion.  However, it's probably not the best place for the vegan graduate, but if you are a meat lover, this is the place for you. They offer 14 varieties of sausage and words can't describe how insanely yummy the Boulud burgers are. For dessert, enjoy one of their ice cream sundaes.

wEE recommend the menage a trois: three DBGB burgers with the works - perfect for the indecisive foodie that wants to try everything!

Ask to sit in the Macondo green room!
Macondo 157 E. Houston nr. Allen St.  Family gone and want to celebrate with friends?  Choose from a variety of Macondo's yummy Spanish tapas and cocktails. They offer a group rate - 10 people for $280 or 15 people for $420 ($28 per person!).

wEE recommend their specialty drink, pouron.

Recommendations for: Mother's Day in NYC

by Sarah Mintz, Contributing Writer
Even if mom's cooking is the best, don't let her step foot into the kitchen this Sunday. Instead, treat her to a lovely Mother's Day meal at one of these delish alternatives:

Photo: Burkeinabox.com
David Burke at Bloomingdales 1000 3rd Ave. nr. 59th Street
What do you do when mom doesn't want to go out, yet you also have zero desire to cook? Call David Burke. That's right, this year you can celebrate at home with a four-course dinner for four people all prepared by chef Burke. For $99, you'll get "Mom's Chicken Soup" with popovers, herb-crusted filet mignon, lobster mac & cheese, chocolate cake and more.  Not only is dinner taken care of for you, but Chef Burke is also including a relaxation kit of body lotion, bubble bath, candle and magazine in the price. All of this while watching Jeopardy and Access Hollywood with mom from the comfort of your couch? Sounds like a success to me!

Dans Le Noir 246 West 38th Street nr. 7th Ave.
Want to do something clever and outside the box for mom? How about something in the dark? This year, take mom to a pitch black 5-course meal at NYCs first "dark dining" restaurant. Your menu order will be taken in the lit lounge before you head into the dark dining room. Previous menu items have included scallops a la provencal, smoked quail's breast, and crispy pork belly on roasted shallots. Don't worry, Mom gets a complimentary glass of champagne upon arrival to help ease her way in to this unique experience!

Wallse 344 West 11th Street nr. Washington St.
After a stroll through the West Village tree-lined streets and rows of brownstone homes, stop in to  Wallse. Hidden on the corner of a residential block you might miss it, so keep your eyes peeled. Chef Kurt Gutenbrunner will be serving up a $65 Mother's Day menu with his spring favorites including pea soup with Maine lobster and soft shell crabs with ramps. Make your reservation now and while you're at it, pre-order a personalized copy of Kurt's new cookbook, "Neue Cuisine", which showcases over 100 Viennese specialties like apple strudel and wiener schnitzel - maybe even have Chef Gutenbrunner sign it to make it extra special.

Photo: Eric Issac
Miss Lily's 132 West Houston Street nr. Sullivan St. All mothers receive a beautiful lily on their special day this year. Miss Lily's is also offering a $30 prix fixe brunch, including two hours of unlimited One Love Bellinis or Hotstepper cocktails along with coconut pancakes, Jamaican rancheros, brioche French toast with bananas foster and more.

Rayuela 165 Allen Street nr. Stanton St.
If a brunch filled with eggs benedict, quinoa-crusted oysters and sangria isn't what Mom is looking for this year, Rayuela is also offering a $55 4-course menu from 2pm-10pm. This diverse Mothers Day menu includes lamb stuffed papaya, crab and shrimp wrapped in sashimi tuna, beef tenderloin with shrimp chimichurri and duck breast with mango sweet potato risotto. I want it all and I'm sure mom will, too.
